CD-Rom Drivers Make Installing Off CD’s Faster

May 18th, 2009

If you think that your CD-Rom is not working as good as it used to, you may not have to change the device right away. Maybe all you have to do is to download the necessary drivers for it to work faster than you can expect. While it is true that CD-Rom drivers are embedded into the operating system, updated drivers may just give you the boost that you need in order to maximize the use of your hardware.

The main purpose of CD-Rom’s is to install software. CD-Rom’s that attached to the computer are rarely used to play music or movies. You can always download audio files and movies from the internet to enjoy them. You don’t have to purchase a CD to do so. If you must, users still prefer to play them using their home entertainment system, which can provide a more complex sound and video effects.

A regular installation off a CD for a medium-sized program may take just a few minutes. However, if your CD takes almost half an hour to install simple programs, you might really have to update its drivers to boost its performance. Drivers could improve greatly the packet transfer from the source CD to your computer.

You can find CD drivers from the actual manufacturer of the device. Rarely will you find them from the website of the company that made your computer. This means that you have to go to the CD-Rom’s manufacturer like Lite-On, Samsung, or Sony’s website, for that matter. Computer manufacturer’s website like Dell and HP may not have these drivers, plainly because they don’t think that it is necessary.

CD-Rom’s would run without installing a driver independently. It’s not like your video, audio, network, or modem card that needs the drivers loaded first before they would work. Windows have drivers for CD-Rom installed even the whole operating system is set up. This is why you can run the Windows CD installer on a fresh hard drive.

The drivers for CD-Rom’s are mistakenly referred to as firmware. These two things are different though. Firmware are codes that are built into the CD-Rom’s internal memory. It goes with the device. Drivers, on the other hand, are codes used by the operating system to communicate with the CD-Rom. It stays in the computer, which is unlike the firmware that is resident on the boot memory of the hardware itself.

Software Errors Caused By Drivers

May 6th, 2009

There are software errors that are directly caused by drivers. Most of these errors pop up during the startup or the moment you open the program in question. A common example would be Media Player errors, which are most likely, caused the sound drivers. Music players work closely with the sound drivers to play the tunes that you want. If the sound drivers are corrupted, then the sound card won’t be able to create the music as expected. Instead, it would return with an error message informing the user of the malfunction.

Software errors could arise from a lot of reasons. But oftentimes, it happens because the program is trying to access a certain resource on the computer hardware and it fails to respond. When instances like this occurs, the operating system would show the user an error with a number and a few details about what could have caused it. Expert computer administrators use this information to look in to the matter and resolve the problem.

Kernel errors are normally associated to drivers. Drivers talk to both the hardware and the operating system in the kernel mode. If you suspect any of your hardware to be causing the problem, try to disconnect it from the computer and see if the error disappears. If it does, then it becomes easier to pinpoint what actually is causing the problem. The first mode of action is to uninstall the drivers existing in your computer and reinstall it with the same one. If doesn’t solve the problem, newer and more updated drivers may be necessary. How to Update Your Printer Drivers

May 2nd, 2009

If there’s one external device that’s always being used, it would be the printers. Printers, like all other hardware, require drivers to work. You can’t send print jobs to this device without installing the CD that came in the box. In fact, you would have to run that CD before you try to connect the printer to your computer for smooth installation.

Just case your printer needs new drivers so it can function normally, you can find the files you need from the manufacturer’s website. If you have an Epson printer, for instance, go to Epson’s website and then skim through the download page. From there you should be able to find the driver files you need for update.

Printer drivers are quite easy to install. After downloading, you will have an archived file on your desktop or wherever you had chosen to download the file. If you have Windows XP, all you really have to do is to double click the file and it would extract its contents. There usually is an executable file along with the others. Updating your printer drivers could be as simple as running that application and let it automatically renew your drivers.

However, for older printers and systems, this simple procedure won’t work. If there is no exe or application file included in the archive, you would have to go through the manual process of update. This would mean that you have to run the Add and Remove Hardware Wizard from the control panel and attempt to load the new drivers from there.

The best way to do it is to uninstall the existing drivers in your computer. Run the wizard and go for the remove hardware option. Once all the files are cleared, unplug the hardware from the system. This would allow for an easy reinstallation of the devices in your computer.

After uninstall, turn off your computer. Reattach the printer into your computer and the operating system would detect it. It would then attempt to load drivers automatically using its database. If it can’t find the drivers that match, the system would ask the user to install the device manually. This is where you have to browse through the location of the extracted files. Once Windows detect the inf and all the files needed, it would being to install the new and updated drivers. Your printer would then be working better than ever after reboot.
